Settings in a Utopian World

The Settings in a Utopian World Suite is a seven-movement work for women’s voices and just intonation guitar. There are four primary movements plus three additional improvisational movements for solo guitar. The text is based on nom-tom syllables, which are meaningless syllables that are found in North Indian classical vocal music. The melodic and harmonic language is set in a microtonal dialect known as 7-limit just intonation.

I recorded the Settings in a Utopian World Suite with Kailey Diggs, Sophia Silvers, Valerie Dickinson, and my wife, Aya Ueda. I thoroughly enjoyed working with this ensemble of singers. All four musicians were very eager and humble to achieve perfection of intonation, balanced with an honest and open expression. Every session was a true delight for me.
